On The Marc

In too many interviews, articles, and silver screen moments to count, Anna Wintour has mentioned that fashion is not about looking backward. As much respect as I have for the woman, I would have to completely disagree with this. Fashion is totally about looking backward, drawing inspiration from the past and making the clothes fit the context of modernity.

In that vein, before I delve deep into reviewing the spring shows, I want to reflect upon one of my all-time favorite collections: Marc by Marc Jacobs Fall 2009 Ready-to-Wear.

I adore the tweedy trousers and rich color palette. I adore the slouchy jumpsuits and retro hats. I adore the colorblock tights and how piles of layers can look so sleek. A little wholesome nature girl, a little Teen Vogue hipster, a little New England college kid, and a little effortlessly posh Gossip Girl, this collection is brilliant styled and perfect, perfect, perfect for fall.

Believe me, there have been dozens of shows that have already caught my eye this season. But first I wanted to share this one, because fashion is about looking backward, remembering the gorgeous and timeless things of the past.

It seems like a while since I have done an outfit post, so I promise one next time! Until then, I hope you all find something this Fashion Week that you love as much as I love this.

I agree with you fashion is totally about looking backwards! Past trends are always being reused and recycled!

I love the looks, although I am sadly far too curvy to pul of the loose layers.

Marc by Marc Jacobs never fails to impress. I so want all of these looks! But, I suppose I'll have to settle for recreating them on a budget! :)

Love the rich colors and textures of this collection. I think it truly defines what most people associate with Fall. I think most designers are about reviving looks from the past and putting a new spin on it. Even avant-garde designers haven taken a lot from 90s minimalism and spun something new based on that. I am unfortunately somewhat underwhelmed with what I've seen of NYFW so far, although I understand the hype surrounding the Rodarte collection. Maybe I'll just need to put everything into context once London, Milan and Paris are done with as well.

This collection was near perfect. The colors and slouchy coziness is just perfect. I'm still going through all the fashion week slideshows too, and Marc Jacobs really knocked it out of the park again (even though he isn't one of my faves, maybe I should reassess?)
